Recensione di Rudy Salvagnini venerdì 6 settembre 2019 Ventisette anni sono passati dagli avvenimenti descritti nel primo capitolo. I ragazzi - componenti il club dei perdenti - che avevano affrontato l'orrore di Derry sono cresciuti e, benché intimamente segnati dall'esperienza, hanno in gran parte parte rimosso, piuttosto misteriosamente, quanto accaduto, cercando di vivere, con maggiore o minore successo, le proprie vite. Quasi tutti se ne sono andati dalla cittadina. Solo Mike è rimasto a presidiare la zona ed è proprio lui - l'unico a non aver dimenticato - a cogliere il segnale che l'orrore sta tornando, compiuto il suo ciclo vitale. Per questo, per combattere il mostro, Mike contatta i vecchi amici e li richiama al patto che stipularono da ragazzi, perché solo loro possono concludere il lavoro che hanno iniziato. Ciascuno di loro è colto nel pieno dei problemi quotidiani della vita, ma il richiamo è troppo forte e niente può impedire il ritorno a Derry. Per tutti, tranne che per uno, Stanley, che si toglie la vita. Gli altri, tra ritrosie, ripensamenti e paure, affrontano di nuovo It. Dopo due anni dall'enorme successo del primo film, sempre diretto da Muschietti, questo secondo episodio chiude la narrazione tratta dal fluviale e complesso romanzo di Stephen KIng. It - Capitolo 2 è il racconto del secondo round dell'incontro tra il gruppo dei perdenti e Pennywise, il clown malefico che abita i sotterranei di una tranquilla cittadina americana, come un cancro letale annidato all'interno del sogno americano nella sua accezione più pura, quella dei sani valori di una comunità apparentemente serena. I protagonisti, invecchiati, hanno perso l'innocenza dell'adolescenza e sono stati forgiati dalle delusioni e dalle illusioni, dai successi e dagli insuccessi della vita. Però, a dimostrazione che certi legami - creati nella solidarietà di tempi delicati come quelli della giovinezza - non si allentano, ritrovano compattezza e amicizia andando incontro al loro destino. La tematica è tipicamente kinghiana e Muschietti la affronta senza l'ispirazione poetica di Rob Reiner in Stand By Me - Ricordo di un'estate altra materia di partenza, comunque, ma con un'apprezzabile sensibilità che consente di mantenerne il pathos pur in un contesto da horror spettacolare. I personaggi sono delineati in modo efficace, se non approfondito. Ciascuno di loro è definito attraverso aspetti significativi del carattere per favorire la differenziazione e stimolare l'interesse dello spettatore portandolo a interessarsi delle loro sorti. La fluida interazione tra passato e presente e il frequente ritorno ai personaggi ragazzini aiuta a sottolineare le motivazioni e la profondità del legame che li unisce. Nelle ultime battute del film, Muschietti e l'esperto sceneggiatore Gary Dauberman spingono forse un po' troppo il pedale dei sentimenti e l'elegia dell'amicizia rasenta la stucchevolezza, ma l'effetto, soprattutto in un film horror, non dispiace per quanto è in fondo insolito. Muschietti conferma le sue qualità registiche e trova alcune vette improvvise e impressionanti di sicuro effetto - su tutte, direi, la vecchietta che offre un tè a Beverly - appoggiandosi altre volte su un immaginario più consueto, ma sempre comunque realizzato con impegno ed efficacia. L'impatto spettacolare è notevole e la storia, pur diluita in una considerevole durata, scorre avvincente e punteggiata da qualche jump scare ben piazzato, sino alla resa dei conti conclusiva che si protrae a lungo tra alterne vicende in un tripudio di effetti speciali di ottima fattura sino a un finale più simbolico che credibile, ma comunque, anche per quello, in sintonia con la storia, che al suo cuore e al suo significato è strettamente legata. Il cast offre una prova di vario livello, ma complessivamente è di sicuro affidamento. Jessica Chastain è una Beverly credibile nel suo essere segnata da scelte vita sbagliate non ha il bagliore radioso di Sophia Lillis la Beverly giovane, ma probabilmente è giusto così. Jay Ryan e Bill Hader spiccano nei ruoli di Ben e Richie, mentre Bill Skarsgård sembra sempre più a suo agio nel ruolo del maligno Pennywise. Da segnalare il simpatico cameo del re dell'orrore in persona, Stephen King, che si diverte non poco nei panni di un negoziante che rivende a carissimo prezzo a Bill la sua bicicletta di ragazzo. E, sempre in tema di partecipazioni speciali, non si può non segnalare anche la divertita apparizione di Peter Bogdanovich insigne regista nella parte proprio di un regista. Nel complesso un film che non delude le attese, offre uno spettacolo di livello e rimane fedele quantomeno alle tematiche fondamentali del libro di King non è poco, in fondo. I protagonisti sono cresciuti, ma quasi tutti loro hanno lasciato la cittadina e hanno dimenticato l'orrore in cui si erano imbattuti e persino molti dettagli della loro amicizia. Solo Mike è rimasto e solo lui ricorda e può prepararli a una nuova e definitiva battaglia. "La prima volta che ho interpretato Pennywise nessuno sapeva cosa aspettarsi da me e io stesso non sapevo se la mia recitazione avrebbe funzionato, se avrebbe colpito il pubblico. C'era molta preoccupazione ma anche la protezione della privacy, perché nessuno sapeva cosa stavo facendo e poteva dirmi che stavo sbagliando o cose del genere. Ho voluto distanziarmi dall'interpretazione di Tim Curry e ho lavorato molto intensamente con Andy Muschietti. Bill Skarsgård It è stato il maggior incasso di sempre per un film horror, un risultato impressionante, che ha dato ulteriore prova della fortuna a cui possono arrivare anche i film R-rated, ossia vietati ai minori di 17 anni che non siano accompagnati da genitori o guardiani legali. Una classificazione censoria che di certo sarà confermata nel secondo capitolo, probabilmente più violento e disturbante del precedente visto che non ha più per protagonisti bambini da trattare relativamente con i guanti. It capitolo 2 è un sequel che non era dato per scontato, tanto che il precedente film è stato distruibito semplicemente come It, quasi fosse un'opera conclusa - e in effetti arrivava a una sorta di soddisfacente finale. Chiunque conosca un minimo la bibliografia di Stephen King però sa che 'It' è un libro estremamente ampio, diviso su due piani temporali alternati e inserito all'interno della complessa mitologia ideata dallo scrittore. Il nuovo capitolo, senza più la paura di dover bastare a se stesso, capitalizzerà dunque sul film precedente e ne riprenderà i giovani interpreti per ricreare almeno in parte l'alternanza temporale del romanzo. While the first film was a fun, but flawed sort of Goonies horror tale that took a very narrow part of the book, this one tries to have it's cake and eat it too picking up the leftover parts of the first film with abundant flashbacks and overreliance on the source material but never going all out with the most wacky parts of King's original source material. Its results are a mixed bag. The flashbacks don't quite work, because they grind the movie and lack tension because we already know who lives. The newer stuff is better, but for an almost three hour movie they're so afraid to go that deep into the mythology of It for fear of alienating audiences so they give a very filtered version of the story and overreliance on cheap jump scares. That being said, is the movie fun?...yeah, yeah it's still a lot of fun. Honestly I didn't even notice the runtime that much, it's just fun. It's like a haunted house at an amusement park, you ultimately know you're safe, it's not really that scary, but while you're in there you are having a good time with the weird creativity of it. Most of the cast does a good job as the adult version of the kids from the original, especially Bill Hader who is just hilarious, and the final 40 minutes are so bats*** insane I'd be lying if I said I didn't kind of love it. But then the ultimate climax with It is kind of a disappointment. I'm not talking about his final form, no spoilers, but if you've seen the TV special or read the book, yeah they keep that. No I'm talking about how they ultimately confront It. I get the message, but it felt like a cheap out to me, and really anticlimactic after all we'd been through in an ultimately 5 hour journey. After 27-years of peace Dairy, Maine, is rocked by a new string of murders, leading Mike Hanlon to call up his childhood friends to came back; but before they can fight Pennywise they'll have to remember their pasts and reform their bond. Featuring Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader, the cast is pretty decent; though they don't have the chemistry that the child cast had in the first film. In fact the old cast is brought back for a couple of scenes to recapture the magic, but they come off as rather contrived. Yet they bring some continuity to the series and beefs up what is largely considered the weaker section of Stephen King's novel. While it's a bit disappointing, It Chapter Two is a pretty solid through not that frightening film. Super Reviewer Sep 19, 2019 Watch a movie closely enough and you'll notice the best filmmakers share a dialogue with the audience. Expectations get subverted. Winking nods are exchanged. A filmmaker needles, prods, pokes and manipulates. When done effectively, you may feel you've gained a new BFF. Although we've never met, I feel that way about Brian De Palma, Peter Bogdanovich who delivers a funny cameo here, and Billy Wilder. They speak to me. With It Chapter 2, Andy Muschietti clearly wants to have a chat with us. He knows how to creep us out, how to get inside your head, but it feels like he's that party guest who overshares until you need to excuse yourself to refresh your drink. Get too much of him and you're bound to say, "Hey, Andy, could you dial it back a notch? You don't have to say it all now." Still, he has enough in the plus column to keep him around for a while. I enjoyed his first It, and although I had never read the book, had a general idea of what to expect with the sequel. Twenty-seven years later, our members of the Losers Club have grown up and mostly forgotten about their childhood traumas, but Pennywise, the Dancing Clown, has returned to Derry to once again feed off of the vulnerable. Can these friends join together once more to defeat this monster or will this horror haunt them forever? From this description and the fantastic trailer, I had high expectations for a popcorn thriller filled with scary images. Each character will once again confront their worst fears, but with the difficulty of adulthood added to the mix. On that front, it delivers handily. What I didn't expect was a graphic early sequence of a brutal gay bashing. I understand it's in the book, but reading about it and watching it onscreen may just turn out to be two very different experiences. I don't have an issue with the depiction, but the execution took me by surprise for a big studio film. It doesn't help that the scene ends with the terrifying return of Pennywise, which takes the hopelessness to a whole new level. Muschietti truly understands film as a dreamscape with the unforgettable images of Pennywise reaching towards the water, slightly out of focus, and ready to strike. Needless to say, I put my popcorn down and dreaded the next two-plus hours. Luckily, Muschietti has the ability to keep things zipping along as Mike Isaiah Mustafa, the only one of the gang to remain in Derry, gathers everyone back to fight Pennywise. All of the adults, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, and Andy Bean, prove great matches for their younger counterparts. Hader in particular has the most dynamic role as the adult Richie, all grown up and working as a popular standup comedian. When the group meets in a fun Chinese restaurant scene, we get a great vivid sense of their bond with the added bonus of terrifying creatures giving John Carpenter's The Thing a run for its money. At best, this film succeeds in fits and starts, much like the first one. It seems to lurch from one character's fear sequence to the next, forcing me to count down how many scenes like this we have left. Fortunately, many of these scenes have great impact, especially and under-the-bleachers scene in which a young girl meets our highly manipulative villain. Muschietti and his cinematographer Checco Varese have created a treasure trove of memorable images, such as hundreds of those dreaded red balloons descending upon Derry in the gay bashing scene, a sewer pipe overflowing with water in a clever homage to The Shining, or Pennywise holding a bunch of balloons as he floats over a giant Paul Bunyan statue. He knows how to get you to wince, such as when one character tries to pull a balloon stuck under a bed, and seconds later, you'll scream. It's delicious trickery which carries over throughout the film. It doesn't hurt to have Bill Skarsgård back with his one-of-a-kind, viscerally detailed Pennywise. His body language and creepy vocal nuances provide an endless series of delights. With so many characters, however, the film struggles with forward momentum. We check in with each individual and ping-pong around to accommodate this large, unwieldy cast. Everyone does a pretty good job, but Hader walks away with the film as exactly the kind of person into which the swearing, motor-mouthed Finn Wolfhard would grow. Ransone also has a field day with his tightly wound Eddie. Pay close attention and you'll also notice a gay storyline, which, in light of the in-your-face opener, didn't really need to play things as coy as it does. Perhaps it's a misguided carryover from the source material, which set the adult portion in the 80s instead of the film's modern day portrayal, but after literally hitting us over the head at the start, the latter subtleties seem a little off. In the final act, the filmmakers choose to go big with a gigantic, apocalyptic CGI sequence which proved exhausting. Skarsgård saves the day, however, with some highly memorable facial contortions. Again, Muschietti may not have the most streamlined story or script to work with, but he does know how to etch certain moments into your brain. Even when things turn into a mushy "Hallmark Card meets Nike Commercial" type of sentimentality in its final moments, I give this film credit for some fine horror moments. Next time, I hope Muschietti gets to talk to us on a much smaller scale. I'd love to know what a quiet conversation with him would look like.
